| Won't let captaincy burden affect my batting: Butt |
| 07.20.10 (9:17 am) [edit] |
Newly-appointed Pakistan Test skipper Salman Butt has assured that he would not let the pressures of captaincy affect his own form and said he was mentally prepared for the job. Butt said he was aware that he had been given charge of a young team which has an average age of 25. "I know this captaincy is going to be a big challenge for me but I am prepared for it and I am confident it will not affect my batting. Infact, I have a feeling the responsibility will force me to be more consistent as a senior opener," he said. "I was made vice-captain for the England tour so I was already ready for the challenge of leading the team when the need arose," the left-hander said. Butt was elevated to the post of Test captain for the rest of the England tour after incumbent Shahid Afridi suddenly announced his retirement from five-day cricket following Pakistan's humiliating 150-run loss to Australia in the first Test at Lord's. Butt, however, said that Afridi's retirement was a big setback for the team ahead of the second Test against Australia at Leeds starting on Wednesday. "Honestly speaking, I never expected to be captaining the side in such circumstances. I never expected Shahid (Afridi) to retire after the first Test," he said. "Afridi handled the team well after the disappointing Australian tour and he did a good job as captain. So his retirement is a setback but we need to move on," he added. The stylish opener, who scored 63 and 92 in the first Test, said the presence of experienced coaches in Waqar Younis, Aaqib Javed and Ijaz Ahmed made up for the lack of experience in the team. "These three really work hard with the players and their presence is a big boost for us. Waqar has been guiding us well and I am sure we will form a good combination," Butt said. Butt was also of the view that the young players need time to settle down. "I think Pakistan cricket has a good and secured future but we just need to be a bit patient and the positive results will start coming soon. We should avoid putting too much pressure on these young players," he said.

| India’s top order moving towards stability |
| 05.05.10 (12:13 am) [edit] |
|
Suresh Raina has finally arrived. Even as critics take some convincing if he is an accomplished one-day bat or if he could be promoted to Test level, there is little doubt the UP lad has worked out the Twenty20 code. Statistics show Raina took 60 balls for his 101 runs. But his final 82 runs came from 38 balls. It implies that he took time to take roots at the crease. If Raina bats this long he is sure to smash a few deliveries beyond the ropes. Against South Africa, he helped himself to five sixes. While his trademark blow remains the heave over midwicket and widish long-on, he has many more strokes in his repertoire. He chips the ball well over the infield and is wristy enough to find the gaps at will. He is determined to make the number three position all his own. The biggest improvement has been his shot selection. Yuvraj Singh too is beginning to roar to life. Once Gautam Gambhir hits his straps, India's top order would have a settled look. Mahendra Singh Dhoni looks intent on playing with five bowlers. He has also shortened his batting order and, twice in two games, played both all-rounders, Ravinder Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan. A good team needs to have six or seven players who can bowl. Similarly, a few all-rounders and bowlers who can use the long handle should take care of the final 15-20 balls of the innings.

| Fielding skills will be paramount: Ravi Shastri |
| 05.02.10 (4:42 am) [edit] |
|
The opening day of the Twenty20 World Cup showed the virtues of spinners. Murali, Vettori, Nathan McCullum and even Jayasuriya choked the batsmen to death. The profligacy of Shane Bond suggested the problems quickies could have on the sluggish Caribbean pitches. So you could have spinners operating at all times in the innings. They could be at the start of the innings or at the death. Middle overs alone are not their playground. In any case, one spinner alone wouldn’t do for successful teams in this Twenty20 World Cup. To be successful, a spinner essentially needs to be accurate. He also needs to have variety. He ought to be able to second-guess the batsmen. Above all, he needs to have a huge heart to experiment with his variations. Quite a few spinners are getting batsmen out with occasional darts wide outside the off-leg stump, as batsmen, time and again, give a charge. There is no set theory to counter this threat. Somebody like Mahela Jayawardene could work the ball around in the gaps. Big hitters can take the occasional aerial route on the strength of their shoulders. Above all, a batting side needs to put a cap on their scoring ambitions. While a 180 might not be defendable on good pitches, a 150 might as well work in the Caribbean. The skill in fielding would thus become paramount. Sri Lanka could have squeezed home in the opener had they not missed those infuriating run-out chances. When the margins of victory aren’t likely to be big, little mistakes can tip the balance. It suggests Indians wouldn’t have an easy time in the competition. They might be excellent with the ball and bat, but questions abound on their ability in the field. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is brilliant but a few seniors could be tested.

| Threats to Pakistan in T20 WC |
| 04.29.10 (11:57 pm) [edit] |
|
First edition's winner India and South Africa are going to be the biggest threats to Pakistan's ambition to defend the Twenty20 World Cup title in the West Indies, feels former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq.
"India and South Africa, I think, are the greatest threats to Pakistan's ambition to win the T20 World Cup. I am very impressed with the disciplined way South Africans play, while the Indians have some dangerous players with plenty of flair," Inzamam said.
Inzamam, however, said that the Pakistan squad is a balanced one and have the wherewithal to defend the title.
"The way I see it this Pakistan team is well balanced and so strong for this format of the game. It shouldn't lose to any team unless they self-destruct with internal issues," said Inzamam, the country's most capped player.
The bowling is strong and has variety so that will be their strength but the batting has issues and the senior players will have to shoulder the responsibilities,
Inzamam, who has played 120 Tests and 318 one-dayers, feels that Misbah-ul-Haq should anchor the innings as he was capable of playing long innings but the others also have to play their natural game.
Shahid Afridi is perfect for T20 cricket and he has lot of energy and enthusiasm as a captain. He will be vital to Pakistan's success in the tournament. I see him turning out to be an inspirational leader for his team.

| Bookies didn't take bets on Chennai win |
| 04.28.10 (5:38 pm) [edit] |
|
Is it yet another match-fixing allegation or is there really more to it than meets the eye? If punters are to be believed, bookies were aware of the outcome of the final match of the IPL between the much-fancied Mumbai Indians and former finalists Chennai Super Kings.
That's why, they claim, the bookies stopped accepting bets on a CSK win even when Dhoni's boys were seemingly on the mat at the end of the twelfth over while batting first.
The entire tournament, comprising 60 matches, witnessed a mind-numbing turnover of US $11 billion, sources in the Indian security establishment said. On an average, Rs 850 crore was bet on each match.
Betting syndicates and their sponsors in the underworld raked in thousands of crores, especially in the final. A top punter said: "Several thousand crores were bet on a victory by Mumbai Indians with the odds heavily favouring a win by the local team at the start of the game. Everybody took it for granted that Mumbai would win. But when the Chennai team started making a bold comeback, the bookies were ordered by their bosses to stop accepting bets favouring a Chennai win. Since the bookies have solid support from the underworld, nobody dared protest against their unprofessional conduct. This enabled the bookies to make a huge killing."
The Pakistan-based Dawood Ibrahim gang gained the most. A big-time Pakistani bookie, known simply as Numan Miya, masterminded the operation for D Company from Karachi. Sources in the police said that "betting took place on each of the 60 matches and almost on a ball-to-ball basis".
It is learnt that on the Indian side, Rajesh Jaipur, a big-time bookie based in Jaipur and known for his close proximity to a highly-controversial figure in Indian cricket circles, led the Indian betting operations this time around. "If Rajesh Jaipur and his brother Rakesh are made to undergo the narco test, then a huge betting racket in IPL matches and the role of the bigwigs will be exposed," a police source added.

| Tendulkar's presence would have helped us in T20 WC: Harbhajan |
| 04.08.10 (5:32 am) [edit] |
|
Considering the red-hot form Sachin Tendulkar is in these days, it would have been fantastic for India's Twenty20 World Cup campaign if the batting legend was a part of the squad, feels Harbhajan Singh.
Tendulkar does not play T20 Internationals anymore hence the selectors did not include him in the Indian squad for the World Twenty20, beginning in the West Indies from April 30.
Tendulkar, who turns 37 on April 24, is in scorching form and has been instrumental in Mumbai Indians' splendid run so far in the third season of the Indian Premier League.
"Had Sachin decided to play in the World Cup, it would have been good for the team. But since he has decided, we know he is not going to change his decision," Harbhajan, Tendukar's IPL teammate, said during an informal interaction with scribes on the sidelines a felicitation function.
Tendulkar, captain of the Mumbai Indians, is the second highest run getter with 394 runs behind Jacques Kallis.
Harbhajan, who is among the top five bowlers in IPL 3 with 11 scalps, has also impressed with his batting skills and his blistering knocks have come handy for his side.
"I have worked a lot on my batting as well," he said even as he hurriedly added that despite his little cameos he will still remain a bowler first.
Asked the T20 effect on the other formats of the game he said, "It is having a positive effect on other versions. The game is becoming more fast now."
The senior pro also said the IPL has helped all the international players in T20 World Cup preparations.
"I think now we as Indian team believe that every target can be chased down if our batting clicks. It's a good practice for T20 Cup. Other teams too will benefit because their players are playing in the IPL," he said.

| Ohh...Sania Mirza to marry Pak cricketer Shoaib Malik |
| 03.30.10 (4:13 am) [edit] |
She's India's tennis ace. He's a high-profile Pakistani cricketer. And they're all set to get married in Hyderabad early next month. Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik are planning a small, private ceremony in Hyderabad, but their match will inevitably generate huge interest in their respective countries. The couple will be based in Dubai, though Sania will continue to play tennis and represent India, while Shoaib will turn out for Pakistan. The alliance has been blessed by both families. "This is the biggest day of my life. I have been in the media glare for too long, and would appreciate a little privacy at this very personal moment," Sania, Shoaib, 28, has pledged Sania his support: "I fully understand what it takes to be an international sportsperson. I'll support Sania in her career as long as she wishes to play." "Representing India at the 2012 Olympics is very important for her, and I will be the proudest husband if she can win a medal for her country," he said.

| 2 new IPL teams cost more than first 8 squads together. |
| 03.22.10 (10:09 am) [edit] |
|
Barely two years ago, when Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd made the highest bid for an Indian Premier League franchise (Rs 441 crore for Mumbai), many termed it as a gamble on a risky concept.
The IPL sure has come a long way in a short time, with the Sahara group on Sunday bidding Rs 1,702 crore for Pune and Rendezvous Sports World forking out Rs 1,533 crore for Kochi.
In fact, these two bids, worth a total of about Rs 3,235 crore, add up to more than the Rs 2,853 crore collectively paid by the existing eight franchise owners in the first auction, on January 24, 2008.
The IPL is invariably full of surprises and Sunday was no different. Favourites Adani Group and VC Digital (Videocon Group) were pipped by Sahara and a consortium of real estate players and businessmen brought together by Union minister Shashi Tharoor under the banner of Rendezvous Sports.
The two new teams will become part of IPL in the 2011 edition. The franchises will be valid for 10 years.
The bidding, conducted behind closed doors, lasted less than an hour after the contenders trooped into a hotel in Chennai.
The base price for each team was $225 million, more than four times the rate at which the first IPL auction began in 2008.
IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said five eligible bids were received in all, which included Rendezvous Sports, Sahara, Aman Vohra, Adani and VC Digital. There was a dash of glamour with Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan dropping in to represent some groups.
Sahara topped with a $370-million (Rs 1,702 crore) bid for a clutch of cities which included Ahmedabad, Nagpur or Pune. Eventually, the Subrata Roy-controlled group opted for Pune.

| When Hitler tried to give English cricket a Nazi twist! |
| 03.20.10 (10:26 am) [edit] |
|
A new book about 20th-century reporting has revealed that future Nazi regime dictator Adolf Hitler raised his own cricket team to play some British prisoners of war during the First World War.
According to the book's author, John Simpson, Hitler declared the sport "unmanly" and tried to rewrite the laws of the game.
Simpson's cites the piece as appearing in the Daily Mirror in 1930.
He says that Oliver Locker-Lampson, an MP, decorated wartime veteran, right-wing zealot and fervent admirer of Hitler wrote the article.
It was published under the headline "Adolf Hitler As I Know Him" on September 30, 1930, as the Nazis' brutal rise to power gathered pace.
According to The Times, Locker-Lampson describes how in 1923, shortly after the Munich putsch, he met some British officers who had been prisoners of war in southern Germany during the First World War.
By coincidence Hitler, then a lance corporal in the German Army, was recovering from his wounds in a nearby hospital.
"He had come to them one day and asked whether he might watch an eleven of cricket at play so as to become initiated into the mysteries of our national game," writes Locker- Lampson.
"They welcomed him, of course, and wrote out the rules for him in the best British sport-loving spirit."
According to Locker-Lampson, Hitler returned a few days later, having assembled his own team, and challenged the British to a "friendly match".
As Simpson points out, Locker-Lampson infuriatingly failed to inform his readers who won, but we can assume that the British POWs thrashed Hitler's XI, because he immediately declared the game insufficiently violent for German Fascists.
According to Locker-Lampson, Hitler had an ulterior motive for wanting to play the game:
"He desired to study it as a possible medium for the training of troops off duty and in times of peace." He also wanted the game to be Nazified.
"He had conned over [sic] the laws of cricket, which he considered good enough no doubt for pleasure-loving English people. But he proposed entirely altering them for the serious-minded Teuton."
Specifically, he "advocated the withdrawal of the use of pads. These artificial 'bolsters' he dismissed as unmanly and un-German ...in the end he also recommended a bigger and harder ball."
Locker-Lampson was not mocking Hitler. Far from it, he regarded Hitler's "essential improvements" to the English game as a mark of his greatness.
The British MP was the founder of the Sentinels of Empire, a blue-shirted group of right-wingers dedicated to fighting Bolshevism.
Like many upper-class Englishmen, he was besotted by Nazism, and the rest of the article is a dribbling paean of praise to Hitler.
Hitler's angry contempt for cricket, his attempt to invade the rules and alter them in his own image, and his inability to comprehend the complexities of the sport all point to one, inescapable conclusion: he was out for a golden duck. He only faced one ball.

| Lee's return to Australia prompted by security fears. |
| 03.19.10 (6:26 am) [edit] |
|
Security concerns in India prompted Brett Lee's return to Australia for treatment on his injured elbow, his agent has claimed.
The fast bowler, who plays for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League, is in Sydney to get treatment on his elbow, which was operated a couple of months ago.
Lee's agent Neil Maxwell said the bowler would rather be at home for treatment than in India owing to security fears.

| Cricket Ashes Tour |
| 03.06.09 (6:22 am) [edit] |
|
Cricket is Australia's national sport, and a passion for many around the world. "Test cricket" - the highest level international matches - are played between (in alphabetical order!) Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, Zimbabwe (currently suspended), and perhaps in the near future, Kenya. Notice a pattern there? How come Canada got away? Climate maybe? Still, Canada has a national team, as does the Netherlands. There are various cricket competitions in the US, notably in California, where ex-pats form the backbone. "The Ashes" is the name given to any test series played between England and Australia. This occurs every 2 years, alternating between the countries. To find out more about why it's called "The Ashes''. Australia lost the last ''Cricket Ashes Tour'' in England, and is out to avenge their defeat! Australia won the first match in Brisbane. The second starts in Adelaide on Friday. The series finishes in Sydney the first week in January, with matches in Perth and Melbourne in between. So if you are going to watch The Ashes 2009 and looking for some cheap accomodation than check out the Melbourne Cricket Ground MCG Hotels. These hotel are really cheap and provide the best facilities.

| NFL TV Package |
| 10.10.08 (5:32 am) [edit] |
|
This is an odd time of year to be thinking about NFL Football, but for football fanatics such as me, pro football is a year-round sport.
Direct TV NFL Sunday Ticket allows football fans like me to follow their favorite teams and watch up to 14 games every Sunday. Basically, Sunday Ticket allows NFL football fans to watch football games that are outside their local market. For example, if you’re a fan of the New England Patriots, but live in California, you’re usually out of luck when it comes to seeing the Pats play on a regular basis, but with NFL Sunday Ticket and a DirecTV subscription, you can watch all the Sunday Patriots’ games to your heart’s content, as well as every other Sunday NFL game. You get lots of football! With NFL Sunday Ticket, you get up to 14 games per week and every Sunday game. There’s also the pre-game coaches show every week, real time player stats for your favorite players, highlights on demand and enhanced games that let you get stats from other games without interrupting the game you are watching. In addition, there’s also the regular NFL Network with its 52 pre-season games.
As a full-blown fantasy football addict, I can think of no better way to spend a Sunday than surfing Sunday Ticket to catch highlights of, say, a Vince Young TD scramble or Carson Palmer shredding some hapless secondary for 400 yards and 4 TD tosses. So, if you’re ready for more NFL action, be sure to check out NFL Sunday Ticket.

| PCB tells Shoaib: Pay up or miss Champions Trophy |
| 07.13.08 (9:51 am) [edit] |
|
Shoaib Akhtar could be left out of Pakistan's preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy despite being cleared to play by the Lahore High Court as the maverick pacer has not yet paid the fine imposed on him for disciplinary violations. Shoaib has been told by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to pay by tomorrow the fine of Rs seven million imposed on him by the appellate tribunal that reduced his original ban of five years to 18 months last month. The 18-month ban has been suspended by the Lahore High Court but the fine remains which Shoaib has not paid as yet. Shoaib himself has been untraceable and his legal counsel Abid Hasan Minto said the fast bowler has not contacted him for consultations on whether to pay the fine or not.
The names of Shoaib and Mohammad Asif were included in the preliminary list by the national selectors last week but the board put its foot down and asked the selectors to come down to Lahore for further discussions.

| Kumble Warned for revealing selection details. |
| 07.12.08 (10:28 am) [edit] |
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has mildly censured India's Test captain Anil Kumble for revealing what transpired in a selection meeting. Selection committee chairman Dilip Vengsarkar was unhappy with certain comments that Kumble made to a Mumbai tabloid.
BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said that while the captain of the team can address press conferences, he was not supposed to reveal details of selection matters. "The captain cannot tell the media what has taken place at selection committee meetings and on selection policies. And that's the reason a letter has been sent to him by the BCCI," Shah said.
Kumble told Mumbai Mirror that he insisted on a second wicketkeeper (for the Sri Lanka Test series) because there was a view among some of the selectors that the Indian team could do with one specialist.
Kumble said that there was nothing wrong in taking the additional specialist wicketkeeper. "As captain I am aware that there could be problems if the specialist were to pull a muscle or have a runny stomach on the morning of a Test. There was a suggestion that Rahul (Dravid) be the second wicketkeeper, but I persuaded the committee to view things from Indian cricket's point of view and advantage."

| Is Tendulkar the next best to Bradman? |
| 07.05.08 (8:53 am) [edit] |
By any stretch of imagination Sir Donald Bradman was the greatest batsmen ever to walk the earth. Statistics give a decent enough idea while comparing sportsmen of different eras, but Bradman, like his fool-proof and compact technique, has kept his statistical graph so high that no batsman could get anywhere near his staggering figures. The debate though is not whether Bradman is the greatest of all, but who is the second best. Here comes Sachin Tendulkar in the picture. Is he behind Bradman in all-time greats list. Even Bradman applauded Tendulkar's greatness when he said the Indian's batting style is somewhat similar to his. Cricket writer Peter Lalor puts out some interesting facts in his blog while discussing the finer points on Bradman and Tendulkar in The Australian. Some felt that Sunil Gavaskar implicitly rated Tendulkar higher than Bradman, but a careful reading of the veteran Indian maestro's statement reveal he was talking about technique, Lalor writes. "For all Bradman's achievements, Tendulkar is the closest thing to batting perfection I've seen, in terms of technique and temperament," Gavaskar said when Tendulkar passed Bradman's record for Test centuries. "If you have a look at some of the film of Bradman, you see his bat came from third man. Because Bradman was Bradman, he could see the ball incredibly early and score at a phenomenal rate. "Tendulkar's bat comes down very straight, he is perfectly balanced off either foot, and there is not a shot he cannot play. "He is probably the most complete batsman the game has seen." Gavaskar noted when he passed Bradman's record of 29 centuries in 1983 that there could be no comparison. "Bradman's tally is still the record. It will only be surpassed if a batsman gets 30 hundreds in 52 Tests," he said. Gavaskar got his 30th hundred in his 99th Test, Tendulkar took 93 Tests. One of the great cricket writers, EW Swanton, explained some of Bradman's domination in an article he wrote in 1998. "For the benefit of the generations who have been born to the game since Bradman's retirement in 1948, here for digestion are a few facts," Swanton wrote. "His Test average is 99.94. Only three other batsmen in history have achieved as much as 60. He is the only man who has scored over 300 Test runs in a day. His 974 in 1930 is far and away the most scored in a Test series. "The most detailed analysis of his batting, from his arrival aged 19 to his retirement at 40, is to be found in BJ Wakley's Bradman the Great, published in 1959. There one may learn not only that he made hundreds (117 of them) in more than a third of his innings, but that of his 338 innings, 16 were ducks while 37 were upwards of 200. He was run out only four times, only once after he reached the age of 21. He scored almost half as fast again as his partners. He made all his runs at 42 per hour, and his average stay at the wicket was 2hr14min." Detractors will argue that Bradman played against a limited number of cricketers and limited his appearance to 10 grounds in Australia and England. Tendulkar has carted his kit to almost 50 different arenas in almost 15 countries. Travel fatigue, however, cannot explain the 44 run gulf between Bradman's and Tendulkar's average. Tendulkar and Gavaskar were a starting point in this discussion because nowhere is Bradman more revered than in India, even today when Indian cricket seems cynical about all things Australian, the Don remains untouchable - in the nicest possible way. Cults have waited 2000 years for Jesus to return, one mathematician has pointed out that cricket fans will be waiting 6000 for the return of another Bradman. The question was put to readers of The Weekend Australian in a poll whose results are not so surprising. Bradman came out a clear leader from a field of seven with 29 per cent of the vote, second was Muhammad Ali (23), then Tiger Woods (15), Pele (13), Rod Laver (10), Emil Zatopek (6) and Michael Jordan (4). As was noted in The Weekend Australian by Jenny McAsey last week, biochemist Charles Davis crunched numbers across sports and concluded that "no other athlete dominates an international sport to the extent that Bradman does cricket". According to Davis, Bradman is not your run-of-the-mill, once-in-a-generation genius. The author concluded we will have to wait around 6000 years for somebody so good again. Healthy cricket fans would be advised to be on the look out for a young genius making his debut sometime around 8028.

| Roger Federer backs himself as favourite for 'Big W' |
| 06.23.08 (4:37 am) [edit] |
|
Roger Federer has maintained a low profile alright, but still considers himself a big favourite for a sixth Wimbledon title, that will take him past the record of five titles by Bjorn Borg, who curiously ranked the Swiss player only No 3 in his list recently.
Many former stars, including Borg and Pete Sampras, feel Federer is most vulnerable at Wimbledon this year. But the Swiss is unaware of all these and said: "Well, I didn't hear. I didn't read the press. I didn't talk to you guys. I didn't read you guys. So, I mean, people say different things. I don't know. I feel like I'm the big favourite obviously for Wimbledon.
"It's a huge year for me, you know, going for my sixth. Getting the fifth one was a dream come true already. It's something that's going to be very hard to match, I think, in the future, in the years to come."
"It's taken I don't know how many years for me to be able to match Borg's record. I hope I can also match Pete's record of seven Wimbledons here. That's what my focus is. What other people and players say I cannot control, you know."
Federer, who feels his game is as good as last year, feels he is up to the task of adding one more Wimbledon title.
Addressing a crowded pre-tournament press conference, Federer when queried on his game and comparing it with last year, said: "Well, now it's better again. Maybe at the beginning of the year, like I said, I felt a little slow. Just felt a little bit rattled due to the sickness I had. But today I feel as good again as last year. You know, one year has gone by. I've played plenty of matches. I feel like I'm playing well, which is good."
On the competition last year and this year, he added: "Well, the same players are right up there. Novak and Rafa obviously are the guys who are the biggest challengers. You know, they've also had a good beginning to the year. I think particularly Rafa, you know, who's had the best start ever to his whole campaign, you know, by doing the same things he's always done during the clay court season, and the rest of the year he's been very consistent.
"I think the same guys are also the favourites again for Wimbledon this year. You know, with Baghdatis, Hewitt, Murray, Roddick, you know, Nalbandian, all these guys. There hasn't been that much of a change actually."
On his one-sided French Open defeat, Federer did not duck and answered: "You know, it's almost easier to forget a loss like that than, let's say, the Rome finals I lost against Rafa with two match points down. Took me much longer to sort of digest. The French was over in such a hurry. I mean, the French Open, as the whole clay court season was over at the same time, so it's easy just to look forward and concentrate on grass. I won't be on clay for 10 months, so it really hasn't been a problem, you know. I'm happy I haven't been affected by it."
On whether a win this year will be his greatest, he thought and replied: "Well, I'm not sure. You know, I mean, first one is always the most unique one, I guess. On top of that, it was my first Grand Slam victory. I guess the one last year was very meaningful to me, you know, in the circumstances, playing Rafa in a five-setter at Wimbledon. It's hard to top that one. But never know what's going to happen this year. So maybe this one will be even better. Who knows."

| Cricket wins back recognition in Canada, after 150 years. |
| 06.21.08 (5:04 am) [edit] |
Canada, which had declared cricket as its national game way back in 1867 but later lost it to baseball and ice hockey, rehabilitated the sport .
To this end, Canadian sports minister (secretary of state) Helena Guergis announced federal funding for the promotion of the sport across the country.
The government of Canada welcomes Cricket Canada (national governing body) to the list of sports that are eligible to receive funding.
An exciting day for Cricket Canada as a national sports organization to have the opportunity to be recognized by the federal government."
Cricket Canada, which banks on the ICC for funding, received a token amount of $77,000 from the federal government for 2007-2008. But with Friday's announcement by the sports minister, government funding may go up considerably.
There were 40,000 cricketers across Canada as schools and other organisations have initiated programmes for promotion of cricket.
With recognition of cricket by the government, Canada has broker a psychological barrier. The amount does not matter. It is the government's recognition that matters. Cricket is now set for exponential growth our country.
The money coming from the government will be allocated to Cricket Canada' high-performance (HP) and long-term athlete development (LTAD) programmes for promotion of cricket.
The jazzy steel grey cricket uniform unveiled Friday includes flashes of red and yellow. The steel grey part is symbolic of our steely determination to succeed at the international level. The flashes of red and yellow reflect our national colours and resolve to win.
With the International Cricket Council listing Canada as `a priority' nation and pumping money into promotion of the sport, cricket has got a big boost in this North American nation.
The large population of immigrants from cricket-playing parts of the world - India, Pakistan and the Caribbean - has added to the popularity of the sport at the grassroots.
To woo these immigrant communities, the nation's top banks such as Scotiabank and the Royal Bank of Canada have become the official sponsors of the sport. In fact, Canada just hosted its first national T-20 championship, sponsored by Scotiabank, involving eight provincial teams.
This summer Canada plays the visiting West Indies, Bermuda and Scotland before it heads for Ireland for T-20 World Cup qualifiers.
Curiously, Canadians say their three-day match against the US in New York from Sept 25 to 27 in 1844 was the first Test match in cricket history - not the 1877 Melbourne match between England and Australia.

| Pakistan all-clear for Champions Trophy by ICC. |
| 06.18.08 (11:04 am) [edit] |
|
Pakistan will host the Champions Trophy in September provided there are no safety and security fears.
ICC acting chief executive Dave Richardson was speaking ahead of the launching ceremony of the biennial event which Pakistan hosts from September 11-28.
"At this point in time we are comfortable with the decision that Pakistan has the ability to host the Champions Trophy but we will continue to monitor security as it is fluid like anywhere in the world," Richardson said.
The top eight Test playing countries - Australia, South Africa, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the West Indies - will compete in the Trophy, regarded as the second biggest event after the World Cup.
The ICC last month assessed security measures at the three cities - Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi - which will host the matches and a report will be put before its board meeting starting in Dubai on June 29.
"It is impossible to say that any country would be the final to host an event. Things can change and I think it is wrong to say that there is any question of a deadline but our board will take a decision on that," said Richardson.
Touring Pakistan has been a security concern for several foreign teams, especially Australia which postponed its March-April tour this year after a series of suicide bomb blasts.
However February's national elections and formation of a new government have improved the security situation which prompted Australia to reschedule the tour into two visits, with the five-match One-day series in 2009 and Tests in 2010.
Richardson, a former South African wicket-keeper batsman, agreed there may still be security concerns in Pakistan. Richardson said Pakistan had the responsibility to host the event in a safe environment.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and ICC have put together a process that is able to deal with the security situation and would enable us to monitor the situation on daily basis from now and until to the conclusion of the event.
PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi said Pakistan would ensure a successful Trophy.
"The Pakistan government has promised foolproof security arrangements, so we are up to it and since people are passionate about cricket, the event will be well attended and successful," said Naghmi.
Sri Lanka is the alternate venue in case the event has to be shifted from Pakistan. The 2006 tournament was held in India.

| Maria Sharapova pledges tip-top Olympics conditions........!!! |
| 05.24.08 (10:36 am) [edit] |
|
Maria Sharapova hopes to battle through a wearying summer and still be in peak condition when she makes her Olympics debut in Beijing. The world number one faces a gruelling run-up to the Games with the French Open, which starts on Sunday, followed by Wimbledon as well as American hardcourt events in July. The Games tennis event starts on August 10 with the US Open scheduled to begin on August 25 in New York, the week after the Olympics close. "It's a big challenge, especially if you do well at Wimbledon. You need to be smart about the events you play before the Olympics because you want to go into the Games having a few matches under your belt, but I'll be coming off the seven to eight week stretch of being on the road," said Sharapova. The top seed here has already suffered wear and tear this year pulling out of her scheduled Italian Open semi-final against Jelena Jankovic last week because of a calf strain. "When the schedule was made, it was known that that's the way it's going to be. You're not going to change the Olympics. It's an honour to play there and it's been a dream of mine. "So whatever it will take I'll make sure I'll be there and do the best that I can." Sharapova, who was promoted to the world number one spot when reigning French Open champion Justine Henin retired last week, begins her bid to win a first Roland Garros title against compatriot Evgeniya Rodina.
