| Yuvraj fined for ICC code breach |
| 11.19.07 (4:29 am) [edit] |
India batsman Yuvraj Singh has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching the code of conduct during Sunday's One-day defeat to Pakistan, the International Cricket Council said.
Left-handed Yuvraj was controversially given out caught behind off pacer Umar Gul by umpire Suresh Shastri for 50 but the in-form batsman, adjudged player of the series, stood his ground and indicated that the ball had grazed his shoulder.
The player was charged for showing dissent at an umpire's decision, the statement said on Monday.
Pakistan went on to win the contest by 31 runs, although India won the five-match series 3-2.
The first Test of a three-match series between the sides begins in New Delhi on Thursday.

| India should remain on guard |
| 11.16.07 (8:38 am) [edit] |
|
Gwalior, the venue for the penultimate India-Pakistan one-dayer, has always evoked mixed memories in me. This was the city that hosted my benefit match, the first ever benefit match directly organised by the BCCI. I can never forget the length to which late Madhavrao Scindia went to ensure that the match was staged successfully. Being 2-1 up, the Indians will be hoping to close the series out here itself but that is easier said than done. They must play as hard as any other match but guard against getting too far ahead in their thinking. They have been playing well and must look to keep up the intensity. On the other hand Pakistan, despite winning the second game, have their share of problems. If they started with a suspect opening combination but a strong middle order, they are now in a situation where they have rediscovered one opener, only for the middle order to struggle. Only Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq have looked the part while skipper Shoaib Malik and veteran Mohammed Yusuf not delivering as yet. That Yusuf continues to get run out every now and then cannot help. Where the Indians could improve is in restricting the boundaries in the initial overs. They must also re-look at the team composition if the dew factor comes into play. An extra seamer instead of a second spinner could be the way out. In either case, I would not advocate playing an additional batsman. Also, the curator has said the pitch will be good for plenty of runs and if we take his word, the fifth bowler must be retained. Coming back to my memories of Gwalior, I cannot forget a prank played by Tiger Pataudi. I used to play in an annual tournament alongside Tiger, Abbas Ali Baig, Jaisimha, Chandra and others and during one such event, we were returning through the Chambal Valley when our vehicle was stopped by two armed men on horses. They kept us captive for nearly two hours, demanding Rs 5 lakh ransom. It was only six months later that I learnt it was a trick played by Tiger!

| Warne, Murali patch up at trophy unveiling ceremony |
| 11.14.07 (11:28 pm) [edit] |
|
After a shrill war of words in which Muttiah Muralitharan called Shane Warne a "miserable man", the two spin wizards on Thursday patched up at the unveiling ceremony of the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, describing the entire episode a case of "miscommunication&qu ot;. The controversy started after Warne, in his column for a newspaper, suggested that Muralitharan's action be tested in match conditions, which infuriated the Sri Lankan. Muralitharan hit back saying that the Australian leg-spinner was "a miserable man" and threatened to snub the Warne during the trophy unveiling ceremony. "Maybe he just doesn't want me to pass his record. Why else would he keep saying these things? I will shake his hand (at the ceremony to unveil the trophy) and go straight off the field instead of trying to be friendly," he had said. However, the two laughed off the controversy at the function in Hobart today, saying that it was nothing more than a misunderstanding. "There is no issue at all. I thought he said something about my bowling action and then I said he was a miserable man," Muralitharan was quoted as saying by 'The Melbourne Herald Sun'. "We just talked to each other and patched it up. It was a miscommunication more than anything else," he added, seeking to put an end to the controversy. Warne also clarified that he did not mean to target Muralitharan and his comment was a general suggestion, which should be considered to avoid controversies. "I spoke to Murali about it this morning so I'm pretty happy actually, I'm not that miserable. I've got absolutely no issue with Murali and his action or anything like that," he said.

| India will look to keep Pakistan on the mat |
| 11.07.07 (5:26 am) [edit] |
|
Having gained the psychological advantage by easily winning the first match, a confident India go into the second cricket one-dayer against arch-rivals Pakistan in Mohali on Thursday, seeking to keep the momentum going with another convincing performance. The five-wicket triumph in the first one-dayer in Guwahati will no doubt serve as a huge morale booster for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men but they can hardly afford to be complacent against the unpredictable Pakistanis in what promises to be a thrilling floodlit contest at the PCA stadium. The visitors, who have a fine blend of youth and experienced players in their ranks, are fully capable of turning the table on their hosts but they need to get their acts together quickly. If the Indians manage to win and take a 2-0 lead in the five match series, the Pakistanis will find themselves under tremendous pressure in the remaining matches. Dhoni has reasons to feel happy with the way the series has started for his team and has acknowledged that the recent games against world champions Australia has helped his players to be mentally stronger. "We came here playing Australia, who are the best in the world. When you come to a series after playing Australia, things do look easier," Dhoni said. At the moment, the Indians have no real worries at hand with most of their top batsmen among runs while the bowlers have done the job though not with the desired consistency. The home team have relied on the two spinners Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik to not only dry up the run flow but also take the wickets but it will be interesting to see if the team management opts for two spinners at Mohali where the track offers more pace and bounce. Captain Dhoni has himself acknowledged the key role his spinners have played of late. "Well, they have been doing it consistently. In the last series (against Australia) also, they did really well. Their performance has contributed to the team's success," Dhoni said. The Indians will also have to take the dew factor into account when they finalise the team composition for the day-night game as the spinners may find it hard to grip the ball in the second session. It will certainly be a tough call to leave one of the spinners out as both have been bowling well. Kartik, who was recalled into the team midway through the series against Australia, has been outstanding in the last few matches.

| Leisurely warm-up for Pakistan's Akhtar |
| 11.02.07 (7:05 am) [edit] |
|
Bad-boy fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar took one for 46 in a restrained performance on Friday in Pakistan's only warm-up match before the one-day series with India. Akhtar, sporting a new shorter haircut, refrained from going all out against a Delhi XI side which made 213 for nine in 50 overs after being put in to bat at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground. The 32-year-old, whose new-ball partner Umar Gul finished with 31 off six overs and one wicket, assumes greater responsibility for Pakistan after the withdrawal of Mohammad Asif with an elbow problem. He returned to international cricket against South Africa last month after 13 months on the sidelines due to a drugs ban, later rescinded, injuries and a 13-match suspension for hitting Asif with a bat. Prolific batsman Younis Khan was the surprise package, taking two wickets in as many balls with his medium pace bowling. For the local side, Rajat Bhatia top-scored with 75 off 106 balls including seven fours and a six. Shikhar Dhawan chipped in with 52 which included a six off AKhtar. Pakistan were sharp in the field, making three run-outs of the Delhi batsmen who were keen to get among runs before the start of the domestic season. The visitors will play five one-day internationals against India with the first in Guwahati on November 5, followed by three Test matches.
