Australia monitoring Pakistan security ahead of tour
12.28.07 (6:51 am)   [edit]
Australia will monitor developments in Pakistan following Benazir Bhutto's assassination to gauge whether the national cricket team can safely tour there next year.

Government would liaise closely with Cricket Australia on security issues surrounding the tour after violence erupted in Pakistan in the wake of the opposition leader's murder.

The evidence of violence in the short period of time that's elapsed since the assassination, in the days ahead we don't know what's yet to occur.

Therefore the most responsible course of action is for us to be in the closest possible contact with Cricket Australia so an appropriate, timely, informed decision can be made about this particular tour.

The government's main concern was the safety and security of the Australian team, which is due to arrive in Pakistan on March 10 to play three Tests, five One-dayers and a Twenty20 international.

Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said his organisation and the Australian Cricketers' Association would not make a decision on whether to proceed with the tour for several weeks.

"It's an appalling tragedy and we only hope that the civil situation in Pakistan can improve," Young said.

Australia have not toured Pakistan since 1998, with their last scheduled tour in 2002 moved to the neutral venues of Sharjah and Colombo due to security concerns.

Cook keeps England afloat in final Test
12.21.07 (6:19 am)   [edit]

Alastair Cook hit an unbeaten half-century as England began a long vigil to avoid defeat in the third and final Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Friday.

The tourists, following on 418 runs behind after being dismissed for a new low of 81 against Sri Lanka in the first innings, went to lunch on the fourth day at 102-1 in their second knock.

Left-hander Cook was unbeaten on 53 and Ian Bell was on 17 in an unbroken stand of 35 for the second wicket.

Sri Lanka, who lead 1-0 in the series, have five sessions left -- weather permitting -- to force a 2-0 scoreline that will lift them to second place in the official Test rankings behind Australia.

Light rain forced the players off the field five minutes before the scheduled lunch break and more wet weather has been forecast over this coastal town in the next two days.

Cook, the 22-year-old Essex opener, and captain Michael Vaughan gave England a solid start by adding 67 for the first wicket.

Vaughan made a watchful 24 when a flashy stroke caused his dismissal 90 minutes after the start of play.

Vaughan attempted to drive left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara outside the off-stump and only managed to edge a catch to his counterpart Mahela Jayawardene at second slip.

Cook, who made 81 and 62 in the drawn second Test in Colombo, overcame his captain's loss to tackle both pace and spin skillfully on the dual-paced wicket.

He punished Welegedera and Chaminda Vaas with forceful boundaries in front of the wicket and defended stoutly against the spin of Muttiah Muralitharan.

Muralitharan, Test cricket's leading bowler with 720 wickets, has been kept at bay by the England batsmen for nine overs in which the off-spinner has conceded 22 runs.

Kumble urges senior mates to conquer Aussie frontier
12.19.07 (12:41 am)   [edit]
A Test series win over Australia in their own backyard will be one of the most cherished achievements for India's top cricketers, many of whom are on their last tour Down Under.

The players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman,& senior mates to make a final push to glory.

"Most of the senior cricketers are here on their last tour of Australia, so it's very important we go back victorious," Kumble said after arriving here with the Indian squad to play a four-Test series, beginning at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26.

Kumble said beating Australia in their den is a major incentive for his team.

"It means a lot to all of us in the team and also it means a lot to Indian cricket. We came pretty close to doing that the last time we came here (in 2003-04).

"Leading up to the (final) Sydney Test match it was 1-1 and we did extremely well in the last Test series (to draw), so it's going to be very crucial for all of us," he said.

"Not many teams have come here and gone home victorious, so it's a great opportunity for all of us."

Talent on its own is not enough to win: Kaka
12.19.07 (12:32 am)   [edit]
It has been a magical 12 months for Kaka. In the most prolific phase of his stellar career to date, the AC Milan and Brazil midfielder has won the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and the Ballon d'Or. Excerpts from an interview with fifa.com...

Q. The Ballon d'Or award is voted for by football writers, whereas national team captains and coaches decide the winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award. Does that make the awards feel different?

Kaka: They are very different awards. It's important to win acclaim from the critics and the media, but also from coaches and players too. And this year I've been lucky enough to have the support of both.

Q. What is your opinion of your fellow finalists: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

Kaka: They are two great players with an incredible talent and wonderful futures in front of them. They are very young too. In fact, at 25, I'm the oldest of the three.

Q. What has been the highlight of the year for you?

Kaka: I'd have to go for the Champions League, which was a milestone in my life, a real high point. It's the most important club championship there is.

Q. What drives you?

Kaka: The player who inspired me as a child was always Rai, who played for Sao Paulo and Paris Saint Germain. When I was growing up, he was the star figure in the great Sao Paulo team that won so many titles. Back then Rai was the one I wanted to emulate.

Q. What is your dream for 2008?

Kaka: My objective is to keep on winning. The Champions League is the biggest trophy there is but the Italian league is a priority too. AC Milan have a great side that should always be looking to win, and this season we're determined to go and lift both titles.

Q. You are becoming more of a leader in the Brazil team. How are you coping with that?

Kaka: Every time I achieve something I feel I'm taking on more and more responsibility for my club and my country. But it's something I've learnt to handle and it's not a problem for me at all.

Q. The FIFA World Cup returns to Brazil in 2014. As a Brazilian what expectations do you have?

Kaka: It's a source of great happiness and I can't wait for it to happen. I don't know if I'll be too old by then but it's something I'm aiming for.

Q. What have you learned from the mistakes of Germany 2006?

Kaka: That talent on its own is not enough to win and that you have to prepare well if you want to win important competitions. I think we need to focus more on our preparations.
