Roger Federer backs himself as favourite for 'Big W'
06.23.08 (4:37 am)   [edit]
Roger Federer has maintained a low profile alright, but still considers himself a big favourite for a sixth Wimbledon title, that will take him past the record of five titles by Bjorn Borg, who curiously ranked the Swiss player only No 3 in his list recently.

Many former stars, including Borg and Pete Sampras, feel Federer is most vulnerable at Wimbledon this year. But the Swiss is unaware of all these and said: "Well, I didn't hear. I didn't read the press. I didn't talk to you guys. I didn't read you guys. So, I mean, people say different things. I don't know. I feel like I'm the big favourite obviously for Wimbledon.

"It's a huge year for me, you know, going for my sixth. Getting the fifth one was a dream come true already. It's something that's going to be very hard to match, I think, in the future, in the years to come."

"It's taken I don't know how many years for me to be able to match Borg's record. I hope I can also match Pete's record of seven Wimbledons here. That's what my focus is. What other people and players say I cannot control, you know."

Federer, who feels his game is as good as last year, feels he is up to the task of adding one more Wimbledon title.

Addressing a crowded pre-tournament press conference, Federer when queried on his game and comparing it with last year, said: "Well, now it's better again. Maybe at the beginning of the year, like I said, I felt a little slow. Just felt a little bit rattled due to the sickness I had. But today I feel as good again as last year. You know, one year has gone by. I've played plenty of matches. I feel like I'm playing well, which is good."

On the competition last year and this year, he added: "Well, the same players are right up there. Novak and Rafa obviously are the guys who are the biggest challengers. You know, they've also had a good beginning to the year. I think particularly Rafa, you know, who's had the best start ever to his whole campaign, you know, by doing the same things he's always done during the clay court season, and the rest of the year he's been very consistent.

"I think the same guys are also the favourites again for Wimbledon this year. You know, with Baghdatis, Hewitt, Murray, Roddick, you know, Nalbandian, all these guys. There hasn't been that much of a change actually."

On his one-sided French Open defeat, Federer did not duck and answered: "You know, it's almost easier to forget a loss like that than, let's say, the Rome finals I lost against Rafa with two match points down. Took me much longer to sort of digest. The French was over in such a hurry. I mean, the French Open, as the whole clay court season was over at the same time, so it's easy just to look forward and concentrate on grass. I won't be on clay for 10 months, so it really hasn't been a problem, you know. I'm happy I haven't been affected by it."

On whether a win this year will be his greatest, he thought and replied: "Well, I'm not sure. You know, I mean, first one is always the most unique one, I guess. On top of that, it was my first Grand Slam victory. I guess the one last year was very meaningful to me, you know, in the circumstances, playing Rafa in a five-setter at Wimbledon. It's hard to top that one. But never know what's going to happen this year. So maybe this one will be even better. Who knows."

Cricket wins back recognition in Canada, after 150 years.
06.21.08 (5:04 am)   [edit]
Canada, which had declared cricket as its national game way back in 1867 but later lost it to baseball and ice hockey, rehabilitated the sport .

To this end, Canadian sports minister (secretary of state) Helena Guergis announced federal funding for the promotion of the sport across the country.

The government of Canada welcomes Cricket Canada (national governing body) to the list of sports that are eligible to receive funding.

An exciting day for Cricket Canada as a national sports organization to have the opportunity to be recognized by the federal government."

Cricket Canada, which banks on the ICC for funding, received a token amount of $77,000 from the federal government for 2007-2008. But with Friday's announcement by the sports minister, government funding may go up considerably.

There were 40,000 cricketers across Canada as schools and other organisations have initiated programmes for promotion of cricket.

With recognition of cricket by the government, Canada has broker a psychological barrier. The amount does not matter. It is the government's recognition that matters. Cricket is now set for exponential growth our country.

The money coming from the government will be allocated to Cricket Canada' high-performance (HP) and long-term athlete development (LTAD) programmes for promotion of cricket.

The jazzy steel grey cricket uniform unveiled Friday includes flashes of red and yellow. The steel grey part is symbolic of our steely determination to succeed at the international level. The flashes of red and yellow reflect our national colours and resolve to win.

With the International Cricket Council listing Canada as `a priority' nation and pumping money into promotion of the sport, cricket has got a big boost in this North American nation.

The large population of immigrants from cricket-playing parts of the world - India, Pakistan and the Caribbean - has added to the popularity of the sport at the grassroots.

To woo these immigrant communities, the nation's top banks such as Scotiabank and the Royal Bank of Canada have become the official sponsors of the sport. In fact, Canada just hosted its first national T-20 championship, sponsored by Scotiabank, involving eight provincial teams.

This summer Canada plays the visiting West Indies, Bermuda and Scotland before it heads for Ireland for T-20 World Cup qualifiers.

Curiously, Canadians say their three-day match against the US in New York from Sept 25 to 27 in 1844 was the first Test match in cricket history - not the 1877 Melbourne match between England and Australia.

Pakistan all-clear for Champions Trophy by ICC.
06.18.08 (11:04 am)   [edit]

Pakistan will host the Champions Trophy in September provided there are no safety and security fears.

ICC acting chief executive Dave Richardson was speaking ahead of the launching ceremony of the biennial event which Pakistan hosts from September 11-28.

"At this point in time we are comfortable with the decision that Pakistan has the ability to host the Champions Trophy but we will continue to monitor security as it is fluid like anywhere in the world," Richardson said.

The top eight Test playing countries - Australia, South Africa, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the West Indies - will compete in the Trophy, regarded as the second biggest event after the World Cup.

The ICC last month assessed security measures at the three cities - Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi - which will host the matches and a report will be put before its board meeting starting in Dubai on June 29.

"It is impossible to say that any country would be the final to host an event. Things can change and I think it is wrong to say that there is any question of a deadline but our board will take a decision on that," said Richardson.

Touring Pakistan has been a security concern for several foreign teams, especially Australia which postponed its March-April tour this year after a series of suicide bomb blasts.

However February's national elections and formation of a new government have improved the security situation which prompted Australia to reschedule the tour into two visits, with the five-match One-day series in 2009 and Tests in 2010.

Richardson, a former South African wicket-keeper batsman, agreed there may still be security concerns in Pakistan.

Richardson said Pakistan had the responsibility to host the event in a safe environment.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and ICC have put together a process that is able to deal with the security situation and would enable us to monitor the situation on daily basis from now and until to the conclusion of the event.

PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi said Pakistan would ensure a successful Trophy.

"The Pakistan government has promised foolproof security arrangements, so we are up to it and since people are passionate about cricket, the event will be well attended and successful," said Naghmi.

Sri Lanka is the alternate venue in case the event has to be shifted from Pakistan. The 2006 tournament was held in India.
